Dual Citizenship Application

Before You Proceed

Please read this important information before continuing with a Dual Citizenship application.

Resumption

For a person whose Sri Lankan citizenship has ceased due to obtaining citizenship in another country.

Retention

For a person who is planning to become a citizen of another country while retaining Sri Lankan citizenship.

Must qualify under ONE of the categories

☑ Age - 55 years or above.
☑ Academic/Professional - minimum one-year diploma or higher, or another recognised professional qualification.
☑ Properties/Assets - land or other immovable property in Sri Lanka worth Rs. 2.5 million or above.
☑ Fixed Deposit - Rs. 2.5 million or above, or USD 25,000 or above, to be maintained for at least 3 years.
☑ Treasury Bond (TB) or Security Investment Account (SIA) - USD 25,000 or above for a minimum 3-year period.
☑ Spouse or unmarried child category - application must be submitted before the child completes 21 years and 6 months.

Requirements for both Resumption and Retention

☑ Completed Dual Citizenship Application Form in BLOCK CAPITALS by each applicant.
☑ Three colour passport-size photographs.
☑ Request letter with contact details: email, phone number and address.
☑ Original Birth Certificate. If the applicant was born outside Sri Lanka, include the Consular Birth Certificate and Citizenship Certificate.
☑ Original Marriage Certificate, if married.
☑ Original Police Clearance Report (AFP), obtained within the last 3 months. DFAT authentication is not required for police clearance.
☑ Supporting documents for the selected eligible category.

💡 Tip: For the Professional category, one qualifying certificate is generally sufficient if it proves completion of a minimum one-year diploma or higher. Australian-issued qualification certificates must be DFAT authenticated.

If applying under RETENTION

☑ Current Sri Lankan passport - bio-data page and alteration/observation pages.
☑ VEVO check confirming permanent residence status/Permanent Residence Visa grant notice.

If applying under RESUMPTION

☑ DFAT-authenticated Australian passport bio-data page and alteration/observation pages.
☑ DFAT-authenticated Australian Citizenship Certificate.
☑ Previous Sri Lankan passport, if available - bio-data page and alteration/observation pages.

📋Important: DFAT Authentication Requirement

  • Australian-issued documents required for the application must be authenticated by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) through the Australian Passport Office.
  • Take the original documents to DFAT for authentication. If you do not want DFAT to place the authentication on an original certificate, first arrange a notarised copy through an Australian Notary Public and then take that notarised copy to DFAT.
  • DFAT can authenticate the Australian passport by making/certifying a copy of the bio-data page. A separate notarised copy of the passport is not required by DFAT.

Final reminders

⚠ Bring original documents and two sets of A4 photocopies to the Honorary Consulate.
⚠ Take a copy of the completed Dual Citizenship Application after attestation to be submitted.
⚠ Post the completed application in two sets to the Sri Lanka High Commission in Canberra. Do not post originals except the original Police Clearance Report.
⚠ Police clearance reports are required for applicants over 16 years of age.
⚠ Translations are not accepted as originals.
⚠ The High Commission will send email payment instructions for attestation fees.
⚠ A reference number will be provided to track the application once it is forwarded to the Department of Immigration and Emigration in Colombo.
